Hi! I’m Andrea Durrheim. Welcome to my rather neglected and somewhat confused portfolio website. I’m a busy freelance content writer, working with business owners and content marketing agencies. I relinquish all rights to my work on payment and maintain confidentiality as standard. Hence, this website, where I hope to provide examples of what I do and how I write.
How It All Started
I started my writing career as a marketing manager with a limited budget. My colleagues thought I had a way with words, so I became the in-house copywriter. From our website to our popular newsletter and from our product labels to brochures, I had so much fun writing that it didn’t even feel like work.
My advertising budget was abysmal, so I traded long-form articles for advertising space in newspapers and magazines and discovered that editors liked my work. Publications ranged from serious trade journals to magazines targeting the general public, and I started to make a name for myself.
Freelance opportunities began to come in, which inspired me to explore the wider market. What began with moonlighting soon turned into a full-time career. More than a decade later, I still write for a living.
What I Write
Many people ask what my niche is. I’ve been fighting that because I’m interested in everything, and I love learning new things. Still, I seem to have fallen into legal content writing lately, and the agency that commissions my work seems pleased with it.
This contrasts with my beginnings, which were in horticultural research, environmental science, and horticultural marketing. I’m still drawn to this niche, but it’s not very lucrative.
Somewhere in between, I wrote a lot of B2B content. After all, as a former manager and business co-owner, I’ve had a finger in just about every functional business area, and I know how it feels.
My Freelance Work Habits
I tend to be quite intense, getting completely absorbed in whatever I’m doing. I work a standard workday, sometimes with overtime, and I believe in delivering my best and keeping my promises.
I like getting things right the first time around, but I’m constantly learning, and my ego is not overly delicate. That means I see feedback on my work as an opportunity to better myself and meet customer expectations.
Honesty, reliability, and courtesy matter to me, and I believe these values contribute to the long-term relationships I have forged with many of my customers.
